The long-awaited sequel to 1994's 'From The Bivvy' is finally here! For many anglers, carp fishing is simple really. Find a water, find the fish, and use a good bait and rig – game on. Well I suppose at the start that’s all you need to concentrate on, and for many that’s all they need to ever think about anyway. Inspired by Kevin Maddocks' book Carp Fever, in all honesty that is where it was for me, until one fateful day in 1986 when, as a young keenie, I wrote to the Carp Fisher editor at the time (one Tim Paisley), and my world was never the same again. Tim introduced me to the world of thinking, not copying, but it wasn’t until his book, From The Bivvy in 1994 that I got it, really got it. Written on the bank during the season 1992/93, the book was a first-hand account of the highs and many lows that Tim went through in carp fishing and in life, and whilst Carp Fever inspired me, From The Bivvy was the book that made me realise what I really needed to do to be successful in fishing and in life. At the time it was somewhat of a slow-burner, but year in, year out, more and more anglers have been telling me (never mind Tim) that it is right up there when it comes to their favourite carp reads.
After a 17-year gap and 10 attempts to find the right season, the planets must have aligned, because what we have here is something not just as good as the first but, I feel, considerably better, due to the variety of waters Tim fishes and, in my own humble opinion, Tim’s standing in carp fishing and his life experiences. Covering the period from May 2009, when Tim started to put this version together, to October 2011, when he spent an enjoyable but frustrating week at Redmire, it truly does have something for every angler who looks for something more than ‘gizza bait, gizza rig’. Describing the sessions minute by minute, hour by hour, you really can see how he never stops thinking about fishing; what the carp may or may not be doing, and how to outwit them.
